MONEDA NACIONALIn one of the latest communist country, state economy have to feed a bloodless economy and assume large importations since the fall of the soviet bloc. One option to reach that goal was to create a new currency known as CUC with virtually the same valor as the US dollar or euros for foreigners and tourists. CUC is an acronym of ‘CUban Convertible peso’ and its official rate of change is around 26 cuban pesos to 1 CUC. Both of these currencies have no legal exchanges rates outside the island. As this new currency has been generalized with tourism, it ended CUC replacing the national currency in everyday exchanges. Nowadays the population is paid in cuban national peso and have to change their peso to CUC. I remember a very frugal dinner in Havana in 2002 with a friend talking about the blocus and the severe restrictions. I remember that he told me that nobody will beleive it or even remember it, even himself as the brain will process a strange selective memory shift. Some years later, I decided to photograph the items that you could only buy with national peso from the nationalized shops in order to record it for him and myself, to not forget in the future that has really happened.
